ABC Data: Cracking the Behavioral Code Together!

As RBTs, we don’t have mind-reading powers. Yes, we understand behaviors, but it doesn't mean we can read minds! But what if I told you we have a secret weapon that makes it seem like we can? It’s the next best thing... ABC Data!!

We may not be psychic, but we can totally decode behaviors through the process of using ABC data. I still think that's a pretty cool superpower!

Now, let's crack the code together!

To get our superpower working, we just have to look at three simple steps whenever a behavior happens.

A is for Antecedent: What happened right before the behavior?

B is for Behavior: What did the client actually do?

C is for Consequence: What happened immediately after the behavior?

We might not wear trench coats, but we definitely need a place to log our evidence. Grab your session notebook and let’s dive deeper into the case!

The antecedent is the exact state of the environment or the event that happened right before the behavior occurred. Think of the antecedent as "A" for "What happened FIRST?" or "A" for "Approach." What was going on right as you approached the behavior? (If it happened 10 minutes ago, it’s a setting event, not an antecedent!)

The behavior is the observable and measurable action. It’s exactly what the client said, did, or emulated. Think of the behavior as "B" for "Be a Camera." If a video camera didn't record it, don't write it down. Swap out words like "they got mad" for exactly what the camera would see: "they threw the crayon."

The consequence is the reaction or change in the environment. It’s what happened as a direct result of the behavior (whether it came from you, a peer, or the room itself). Think of the consequence as "C" for "Conclusion." How did the scene wrap up? Did a toy get taken away? Did they get a break? Did they get a hug?
